My family and I enjoy walking along the scenic Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail as do many residents and tourists who daily visit our central coast and I will fight to keep offshore drilling rigs from becoming part of the scenery. Our natural Monterey coast is home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, historic Cannery Row and the famous Fisherman’s Wharf drawing tourists from around the globe. Santa Cruz is known for its beautiful beaches, great surf and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Amusement Park that attracts locals and tourists alike and with you, I will stand to keep it pristine!
I do not support the recently released draft proposal to allow the expansion of oil and gas drilling off our Central California coast and I will work to protect and preserve our environment. The five year proposed plan beginning as early as 2019 would legally allow oil and gas companies to lease 47 areas of America's coastlines. The proposed plan for new drilling in the Pacific Ocean would include two areas off the Northern California coast, two off the Central California coast and two off the Southern California coast.
Monterey Bay is a marine sanctuary and under federal law, no drilling is allowed in national marine sanctuaries. Also, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties have local laws that ban the construction of onshore oil terminals, pipeline and other oil industry equipment without a vote of the public. Offshore oil drilling will not be a partisan issue instead it will unite voters to stand together. I will fight to stop any new offshore drilling.
